Essentially the Council is responsible for the creation and maintenance of an environment which promotes good public health and well being through the implementation of statutory and preventative control programs pursuant to Western Australian Health and Environmental legislation. Areas of responsibility with regard to environmental health includes:
- The assessment and approval of on-site effluent disposal apparatus including the installation of conventional septic tank and leach drain systems or alternative treatment units;
- The surveillance of food premises to ensure food safety standards are met. Principally this involves routine inspections of cafes, restaurants, takeaway food shops, hotels and taverns.
- Disease control including information on the eradication of insect and rodents, regular bacterial monitoring of public swimming pools, investigation and notification of infectious diseases, monitoring of air quality and regular inspections of tourist accommodation and public buildings.
- The monitoring of noise upon receipt of complaint or as required to ensure compliance with the Environmental Protection (Noise) Regulations 1997.
- The ongoing management of refuse disposal facilities within the Nabawa and Yuna localities.

The online program includes basic food safety principles, interactive tasks and quizzes, a printable training acknowledgement form and a completion certificate. This training should be completed by food handlers that operate within the Shire of Chapman Valley
